Waukesha is a family-friendly suburban city in Waukesha County, southeastern Wisconsin. With an approximate population of 75,000 and just 18 miles west of Milwaukee, Waukesha offers residents the laidback charm of cozy living with the convenience of a big city a 20 minute drive away. Wisconsin’s artsy capital, Madison, is only 60 miles west. Waukesha is also a very art-friendly city, with public art installed and murals painted around the city’s historic architecture.
Waukesha is located on both sides of the Fox River, which starts near Menomonee Falls and flows into the Illinois River.
As of the 2010 census, there were 70,718 people and 28,295 households. 24% of residents were under the age of 18, 11% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 30% were from 25 to 44, 25% were from 45 to 64, and 11% were 65 years of age or older.
There are many families and young professionals in Waukesha, as the median age in the city is a very young 34 years and the average age is 39. The median household income is $60,000 and most residents own their homes.
Many incorrectly believed that the origin of “Waukesha” was an Algonquian word meaning "fox.” In fact, "Waukesha" is an Anglicization of the Ojibwe proper name Waagoshagor the Potawatomi name Wau-tsha. This was confirmed by a historian of the region. Wau-tsha was the leader of the local tribe at the time of the first European settlement of the area, described as "tall and athletic, proud in his bearing, dignified and friendly.”
Waukesha’s median home value is approximately $200,000. Homes for sale in Waukesha, WI have a median listing price of $260,000 and an approximate price per square foot of $145. Land is available starting at $25,000 and up to $1.25 million. Single family homes are for sale in Waukesha from under $150,000 to over $1 million. Meanwhile, condos and townhomes start at $125,000 and go up to $500,000. There are a few multi-family homes for sale from $175,000 - $350,000.

Some of the most desirable neighborhoods around Waukesha, WI are Pebble Valley, Rolling Ridge South, Westowne, Horeb Heights, and College Hill.
Waukesha has its own downtown area with an abundance of restaurants, shops, salons, and independent businesses. Visitors can partake in a wide variety of activities including the Waukesha Farmers’ Market, a food truck festival, County Fairs, hot air balloon rides, and the Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum.
The Springs Water Park, located at The Ingleside Hotel, features more than 45,000 square feet of indoor water park fun. The family-friendly adventures include a raft ride, body slide, indoor/outdoor whirlpool, activity pool, Barrel Roll River, tube ride, arcade and a snack bar.
Waukesha has a lot of parks. Two of the largest are Minooka Park and Fox River Park. Minooka Park is the largest park in the Waukesha County Park System with a total of 579 acres. Minooka features include a swimming beach, miles of wooded trails, dog run, pond, archery range, and, in winter, miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and a spacious sledding hill. Fox River Park is a 257-acre riverside park full of mature woodlands, wetlands, and many species of wildflowers. Hikers, bikers, and rollerbladers can watch many different birds along the miles of paved trails that wind through the park. Additional features of Fox River Park include a canoe launch, volleyball, and a play area.
Please note that the city of Waukesha is adjacent to the Town of Waukesha. The city also shares borders with City of Brookfield, Town of Brookfield, Genesee, New Berlin, City of Pewaukee, Village of Pewaukee, and Town of Delafield.
