About Hartland

Hartland is a small, safe, family-friendly village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, along the Bark River. It is a suburb of Milwaukee, which is 25 miles east, and has a very low crime rate, making it a great spot for commuters with families. Parks surround the cozy community, providing ample choices to take advantage of the area’s natural beauty, such as trails, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis and volleyball courts, and playgrounds. In addition to the parks, there are gorgeous lakes and golf courses nearby.

The population was 9,279 as of 2017. The median age in the village was 37.5 years. 28% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.4% were from 25 to 44; 28.2% were from 45 to 64; and 10% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 47.4% male and 52.6% female.

History of Hartland

On December 10, 1859 the Shawano County Board of Supervisors organized the township of Hartland. On May 20, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a Homestead Act that pertained to Wisconsin and a few other states. This act gave 160 acres to anyone “who settled upon a tract to which no adverse title or claim exists, erects a habitation and lives on it for five years.” This gift of free land created a tremendous incentive for people to emigrate from other countries, or to move to other states or territories where this act applied.

Things to do in Hartland

Hartland Public Library is located in the downtown village of Hartland, right in the center of town. A 2 minute walk south brings you to Nixon Park, which features a splash pad that attracts lots of locals in the summertime. Nixon Park hosts a concert series from May - September. There is a family movie series that takes place during the summer at Nixon Park and The Hartland Fire Department. Hartland has lots of recreational programs for adults and children. There are athletics, dancing, self-improvement, golf lessons, arts and crafts, card games, and many more.

The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a thousand-mile footpath entirely within Wisconsin and is one of only eleven National Scenic Trails. A segment of approximately 4.7 miles of the 1,000-mile long Ice Age National Scenic Trail passes through Hartland. While the entire trail is still under development, those portions passing through Hartland have been completed. The Aldo Leopold Overlook and Cottonwood Wayside, and the John Muir Overlook and Maple Wayside are a part of the Ice Age Trail. The Ice Age Trail also passes through Penbrook Park, Nixon Park, Bark River Park, Hartbrook Park, and Centennial Park.

Camp Whitcomb/Mason, a Boys and Girls Clubs summer camp, is located near Hartland.
