About Oconomowoc

The city of Oconomowoc is partially adjacent to the Town of Oconomowoc, and near the village of Oconomowoc Lake, Wisconsin. Although the hustle and bustle of Milwaukee is just a 30-minute drive away, the area’s many lakes define life in Oconomowoc.

Oconomowoc has natural beauty to spare, year round, for its active residents. Outdoor recreations residents may choose from include watercraft rentals, sand volleyball, snorkeling, and fishing, to name a few.

The population is approximately 17,000. As of the census of 2010, the median age in the city was 38.6 years and the median household income was $60,000.

History of Oconomowoc

oconomowoc watersideOconomowoc is a city whose name comes from the translation of “where the waters meet” in the Potawatomi language. Before 1700, this region was inhabited by Potawatomi peoples. Deep woodlands and clear lakes provided members of the Potowatomi and Winnebago tribes with wild game, fish, and the raw materials to build their tools and homes.

The first caucasian person recorded in the area established a trading post in 1827. Other white settlers soon followed, beginning in 1830. Oconomowoc was incorporated as a town in 1844 and as a city in 1865.

In the 1870s, Oconomowoc started to become a summer resort town for wealthy families from the Midwest. Large houses were established around the town's lakes, particularly Oconomowoc Lake and Lac La Belle.

The museum’s Streets of Old Gallery features displays of a turn-of-the-century Victorian home, dentist office, barbershop, print shop, medical clinic, bank, and John S.Rockwell’s general store.

The film, The Wizard of Oz premiered at the Strand Theatre in Oconomowoc on August 12, 1939. Oconomowoc boasts a healthy appreciation for the arts, with art festivals held year round, including the annual Oconomowoc Festival of the Arts.

The Oconomowoc Arts Center also hosts plenty of special events, programs, and show series. Street dances, a weekly farmer’s market, Gallery Night, Badgerland Water Skiing team shows, Free Moonlit Movies, and holiday parades bond the community on a regular basis.

A stroll along the tree-lined streets of Oconomowoc soothes and revitalizes. There are lots of outdoor spaces around Oconomowoc to continue appreciating mother nature, like the many parks with their various amenities.

There are youth sports teams (baseball, kickball, soccer, flag football, lacrosse, field hockey), swimming, tennis, and golf lessons, and adult fitness classes, such as yoga. Lake Country Trail is a 15 mile trail nearby.

A short distance outside of Oconomowoc, there is the Glacial Drumlin State Trail, a 52 mile long bicycle trail that runs between Cottage Grove and the Fox River Sanctuary in Waukesha with easy connections to Madison and Milwaukee.

Nashotah Park is a 444-acre park nestled among rolling hills, woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands that offer habitat for deer, waterfowl and a variety of songbirds. Retzer Nature Center consists of 450 acres of prairie, forest, wildlife habitat, nature trails and environmental learning facilities in Waukesha County.
